Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering on 4th International Yoga Day celebrations at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, in the foothills of the Himalayas on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to take pride in their heritage as he joined tens of thousands at an event to celebrate world yoga day.

Speaking at the event where around 60,000 people participated, he said “Yoga is enriching millions of lives all over the world. The gems of India’s unique heritage, such as yoga, will be respected by the world at large only when we ourselves respect our culture and traditions,”.

What is International Yoga Day?
It’s a global event that takes place each year on June 21 and aims to raise awareness of the benefits of practicing yoga. It began in 2015 when India presented a bill to the United Nations General Assembly, suggesting an international day to recognise and celebrate the art of yoga.

The proposal received a huge amount of support and was officially passed on June 21, 2015, marking the international day.



Why does it fall on June 21?
June 21 is the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

It shares a special significance in many parts of the world and many countries mark the day with festivities.

What is the theme of International Yoga Day 2018?
The theme for this year’s Yoga Day is Yoga for Peace.

How is International Yoga Day celebrated?
Millions of people around the world will celebrate the day by attending taster sessions, workshops and retreats.

In some countries, public yoga sessions will take place. In India, an event in Dehradun will take place today from 6am, where over 60,000 visitors are expected to take part in celebrations – including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Across the globe in New York, thousands of yogis will travel to Times Square, to take part in free classes all day long.



Many Indian celebrities participated in the International Yoga Day and urged to people for the same. Bollywood Queens Malaika Arora, Kangana Ranaut, Jacqueline Fernandez and athlete Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal took to Twitter to share their videos of performing Yoga.
